Bacopa has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years to support cognitive performance, mood stability, and wellbeing. Bacopa is known by many names, including Brahmi, Indian Pennywort, Water Hyssop and the Herb of Grace. The plant originates from a variety of locations, including North India, Australia, Africa, Asia, North and South America, as well as parts of Europe.
The name ‘Brahmi’ originates from the Hindu god Brahma, which means ‘energy’ or that ‘which expands consciousness’. With a distinct bitter and sweet flavour, it harmonises all three traditional Ayurvedic doshas (vatta, pitta and kapha). It is classically said to give strength to the mind, promote sleep and energy, and rejuvenate the depleted nervous system.
Traditional uses include:
Improve memory and cognitive function
To relieve anxiety and stress
To assist with focus and mental clarity
As a calming agent and adaptogen
As a nourishing tonic when run down and depleted
As a brain tonic in healthy adults over 50 years
