Known for its distinctive and vibrant coloured flowers, Passionflower is cherished in the herbal world for its gentle anxiolytic and mild sedative qualities. Native to the North, Central and South Americas, it thrives in full sun and well drained soils. The species within the Passiflora genus grow mainly as climbers, like its most well-known family member, the humble passionfruit vine. It was originally named in the 17th century for the unusual physical appearance of its flowers, which Spanish missionaries’ thought was evocative of the crucifixion (the ‘passion’) of Christ. While the flowers may attract most of the attention for their beauty, the plant's medicinal qualities are derived from their leaves.
In modern apothecaries this herb has been used for its fast-acting calming effect and has been recommended for use before public speaking and other anxiety-inducing events.
